Dormouse Nest Box Sponsorship
Nest boxes are an important part of the Cheshire Dormouse Project. Dormice will readily use purpose-built nest boxes. The boxes are built of wood and are similar in design to those frequently put up in gardens for small birds. Indeed, every year we have found birds nesting in our boxes.
Dormice use the boxes as a secure place to build their nests, they also frequently have their babies and raise families in the boxes.
Dormice are very difficult to see, but the boxes give us an easy way to find them. During the summer we check the boxes regularly, counting and weighing all the dormice we find. This enables us to keep a close eye on the population. The dormice are very tolerant and seem relatively undisturbed by our activity - they never desert the nest or their young. The results of these checksare included in the bulletins sent to nest box sponsors.
N.B. Dormice are a protected species and it is illegal to disturb them. Everyone involved with checking nest boxes has a special licence from English Nature.
How You Can Help
You can be involved with the Dormouse Project by sponsoring a nest box. You can sponsor a box for yourself, or as an unusual present to someone else.
Nest box sponsors recieve
- A certificate
- A dormouse fact pack
- two news bulletins through the year telling you what has been going on down in the dormouse wood. Bulletins are usually issued in June/July and November
Sponsorship costs £10 for one year.
