Sinderland Green Woods
Broadleaved woodland plantation.
Location
The reserve is about 2.5 miles (4.2km) north west of Altrincham (O.S. Grid Ref.: SJ733905). It is about 0.5 miles west of the Dark Lane and Brookheys Covert nature reserves.
Access
Leave the A56 at the Bowden traffic lights by the B5160 (Charcoal Lane) and the turn north through Dunham Town. After about 1.5 miles (2.4km) at the junction of Redhouse Lane and Sinderland Lane continue towards Partington and the lane to the reserve is the first on the right.
Alternatively leave the A56 at Broadheath alond Sinderland Road and continue towards Partington for about 2.25 miles (3.5km).
Note that cars are not allowed on the lane leading to the reserve. Access to the reserve is by permit from Cheshire Wildlife Trust.
Status
The reserve has been managed under licence from the National Trust, Dunham Park Estate, since 1981. It's area is approximately 7 acres (3ha).
Topography
The reserve is on the banks of Sinderland Brook and is divided into three parts by the intersection of the brook and the lane. It is mainly open mixed deciduous woodland and contains two ponds. Flora
The reserve west of the lane is woodland with a pond. Tree species include mature oak, black poplar, alder, ash and sycamore. The flora includes lesser celandine and wood sorrel as well as tall species such as rosebay willoherb and Himalayan balsam. The area east of the lane is mainly tall grasses (e.g. Phalaris arundinacea), rosebay willowherb, Himalayan balsam etc, with scattered trees of various species. There is a pond at the eastern end.
Management work done by Cheshire Wildlife Trust has been to clear the ponds, plant hawthorn hedges, plant a mixture of tree species such as black poplar, oak, alder, holly, rowan and alder buckthorn in all parts of the reserve and to control undesirable species such as Himalayan balsam and sycamore.
Fauna
32 species of birds and 3 mammals (shrew, rabbit and fox) have been recorded.
