Volunteers

Volunteers are the life blood of the Cheshire Wildlife Trust, their support, enthusiasm and commitment keep the Trust on track with its vision of 'A Cheshire region richer in wildlife by 2020'.

Volunteers carry out a plethora of different tasks, from committee members and nature reserve managers to sales officers and recording officers. They can either work as a member of their local group or as a volunteer working directly out of Grebe House. The amount of time given varies considerably as well it can be as little as two or three times a year or as much as every day, it's up to each volunteer to decide.

The Trust needs volunteers to help in all of its activities particularly those areas where there isn't the financial resources to undertake the work by other means. Activities are varied and situated throughout the region.

In the winter months practical conservation work is the order of the day. Every other Sunday there will be a work activity at a Cheshire Wildlife Trust nature reserve somewhere in the region. Woodlands, mosslands, and heathlands plus many more varied sites will need the help of volunteers to uphold their management.

The spring brings about the survey season with several days of recording being undertaken, there is also the opportunity to receive training in a wide range of subjects concerned with habitat or species recording. These training sessions will wherever possible be held with a classroom session in the morning and outdoor practical session in the afternoon.
Within the practical volunteer days there will also be room for some less taxing activities such as general walks around reserves.

It is also of great important that the message of the wildlife trust is promoted as widely as possible around the region. This is where volunteers can come into their own. There are a multitude of local fairs, carnivals and country shows that would benefit the Trust hugely if we had representation at these events. If staff members attended all of these events there would be little time for anything else, yet if the burden of these events were spread across several volunteers the actual time commitment would be minimal. Displays, leaflets and other resources would be provided by Grebe house and transported to and from the event if necessary. The more events we attend the more potential volunteers are attracted, spreading the workload even further.

If you would like to become more involved in the work of the Trust please contact Lee Greenhough, our volunteer Co-ordinator, by phone on 01948 820728, or by email.
