Rare in Europe, around 90% of the UK Limestone Pavement is to be found in Cumbria, north Lancashire, and North Yorkshire. It is still being damaged by the removal of stone for garden use.
Save our Squirrels is a community based conservation project which aims to secure the long term survival of native red squirrel populations, in their natural habitat, through a partnership between scientists, public agencies, private sector sponsors, landowners, and voluntary conservation and community groups.
Cumbrian water voles have suffered severe losses and are in danger of becoming extinct in the county. A joint venture between Cumbria Wildlife Trust and Eden Rivers Trust aims to reverse this decline through the work of the Cumbria Water Vole Project.

The first phase of the Cumbria Hedgerow Survey took place over the summer of 2003 and the second and final phase was completed over the summer of 2004. The summer of 2005 will see the final results of the survey and will be published here.
The Wealth of Wildlife (WoW) project aims to promote Cumbria as the number one wildlife destination in the country, protecting Cumbria's rare species and habitats, and involving people in practical conservation work
