Marine & Coastal Conservation

Dorset has a stunning and well-known coastline - a large part of which forms much of the Dorset and East Devon Coast World Heritage Site. Offshore, the marine environment is less accessible and consequently less appreciated but we are gradually learning that we have a rich and varied seabed with a number of fascinating and important habitats and species.

Dorset Wildlife Trust has a long history of involvement in marine conservation, going back to the pioneering work leading to the establishment of the Purbeck Marine Wildlife Reserve in the 70s.

The Seasearch project in Dorset is co-ordinated by Dorset Wildlife Trust. Click here to find out more about the project and how to get involved.

Marine Bill - an opportunity
The Government is currently consulting on a new Marine Bill. This will be a wide-ranging piece of legislation, including the possibility of new marine nature conservation legislation. There are now many pressures on the marine environment and Dorset Wildlife Trust, along with the Wildlife Trusts Partnership, is engaged in a range of projects and activities aimed at protecting and enhancing marine wildlife.
