How to make a donaton

Herefordshire Nature Trust is protecting local wildlife and helping it to flourish, but most of our work costs money. We rely on the support and generosity of people like you to fund our vital work for conservation: we are grateful for any amount you can give us.

Please help us to raise money for our Lugg Meadows Project

Lugg MeadowThe great expanses of Upper and Lower Lugg Meadow are unique in Herefordshire, not just for their sheer size, but also because they are the most important surviving Lammas meadows in the UK. Each year, from February 2nd (Candlemas) to August 1st (Lammas) the meadows are closed or 'shut up for hay', with no grazing permitted.

These ancient hay meadows, whose records date back to the time of the Domesday Book, have great ecological and historical significance, and a vital place in our national heritage. These meadows are a good resource for both wildlife and people.

As such we want to:

  • Children at Lugg MeadowWork with local schools to use the reserve as an educational resource and involve young people.
  • Investigate the re-introduction of water voles onto the Lugg Meadow.
  • Create new wetland habitat on Rickyard Pasture, including reedbeds and muddy scrapes.
  • Involve local communities in developing the full potential of the reserve.

But we need your help to achieve this.

With a gift from you we can help reach our long-term goal on the Lugg Meadow

  • Lower House Farm mapWe have a unique opportunity to research the re-introduction of water vole on our Lugg reserve. Water voles have declined by up to 98% in the UK. In the past the River Lugg supported strong populations of water voles. This project will not only provide suitable habitat but research the feasibility of a re-introduction.
  • Create new wetland habitat for wildlife, it is important to maximise the amount of habitat to give wildlife a fighting chance.
  • This project is the start of our long term commitment to this important reserve. There are concerns about inappropriate use of the reserve, we know that if we can engage with local communities we can overcome these concerns. Part of the work will provide evidence for a much larger project which will involve people with wildlife on the reserve.
  • We will be engaging with local schools to use the reserve as a classroom, getting young people back into the natural environment.
