Trust News - Autumn 2007

Dr. Anthea Brian, MBE
1919-2007

The Trust has learned with great sadness of the death of Dr. Anthea Brian, MBE. It was only in the Autumn, 2006 issue of Wildside that members were told of the award of an MBE in recognition of her work in conservation in Herefordshire.

Since then she had continued her involvement in the work of the Trust with just as much interest and vigour as before. When the Trust’s Fritillary walk over her beloved Lugg Meadows was held in April she took part, explaining the history and natural history to the enthusiastic participants.

She was actively involved in helping to arrange this summers Open Garden events, where members of the public open their gardens in aid of the Trust, and which have been such a great success.

She had also continued her work in helping to catalogue photographs for future use, many of which were her own. She was still to be found sometimes on ‘garden days’ working with other volunteers in the garden at Lower House Farm.

Her varied knowledge and interests in so many fields was impressive and her enthusiasm for all aspects of conservation will be sadly missed.

Visit to Lugg Meadow by the BAHS 3rd April 2007

Lugg Meadow was the focus of a visit by the British Agricultural History Society. Members from as far afield as Cornwall, Sussex, Leicestershire and Cumbria explored the meadow. An informative exhibition using the Trust’s excellent collection of photos and plans illustrated the layout of strips and watercourses, and the management of the meadow at different seasons. Dr. Anthea Brian generously shared her unique and extensive knowledge of the meadow and its history. BAHS members thought that, being the largest surviving Lammas meadow and the one best demonstrating traditional management, Lugg Meadow should be more widely recognised.

Predatory Bird Monitoring Scheme

This scheme has been running for many years now, taking predatory bird carcasses and analysing them for pesticides and pollutants. Due to concerns for the scheme in the light of avian flu a new system for sending birds to the scheme has been set up. If you find a dead bird of prey ring Lee Walker, 01487 772504, and he will send you a special type of packaging for sending the corpse through the post to the CEH where analysis takes place.

Wildlife Crime continues to be a problem. If you wish to report a wildlife crime incident then you can do so at the RSPB web site.

Greening the Woolhope Dome

Woolhope Dome Green GuideA new “green” guide has been launched specifically for residents and landowners in and around the Woolhope Dome.

The Woolhope Dome Green Directory is a useful guide to managing land and living in an environmentally friendly way. Full of helpful contacts for those responsible for the Woolhope Dome’s grassland, orchards, and woodland, plus information about land management grants, it also promotes ways of supporting local food producers and embracing renewable energy. The publication is one of a series of initiatives by the Trust’s Woolhope Dome Project.

Free copies of the directory are available from the Woolhope Dome Local Food and Craft Market, held at Woolhope Parish Hall on the last Saturday of every month, from 10am to 12.30pm. The market, initiated by the project, provides the chance to support rural enterprise and to stock up on a wide and tempting variety of food, drink, crafts and plants from stall-holders who live and work on the Woolhope Dome or nearby.

The Woolhope Dome Green Directory is also available from Herefordshire Nature Trust tel: 01432 356872.
