Open Gardens events 2008

For the third year running, some of our members have volunteered to open their gardens in aid of the Trust. Let’s hope that the sun shines on their efforts this summer!

Sunday July 27th  (12.00-5.00)

Location: The Wharf, Lyonshall. Mr and Mrs Strangeway.

Description: Half acre organic garden, with views of rolling country and 11 C. church.  Fruit trees, vegetable plots, herb garden, herbaceous beds, greenhouse and trees, including aged yew.

Self service refreshments available. Entry £2.50, Children under 10 free. Guide dogs only.

Directions: Located opposite St Michael’s Church, Lyonshall on A 44.  Parking in lane next to the house.

Sunday 7th September (10.00 - 4.00)

Location: Cottage Farm, Middlewood, Hereford.  Ms Julie Jones.

Description: The tree lined West Brook borders the large conservation area, which is in a fairly early stage of development.  There is also an orchard, planted in recent years with old species of fruit trees, native to Herefordshire.  A large pond supports wildlife, while the main cottage garden provides a cheerful surround to the house.  There is plentiful parking, and with easy access to the Wye Valley Walk and Merbach Common from here, a walk in this beautiful area could follow on from visiting the garden.

Entry £3.00, Children free. No dogs. Home made teas.

Directions: About 5 miles east of Hay on Wye off the B4352 or B4348.

May to September (By Appointment Only)

Location: Mr and Mrs Philpott, Kingsthorne - Tel: 01981 540614

Description: These two acres of gardens, organic meadowland, ponds, shrubs, copse and flower beds have been created, and are managed, with wildlife in mind.  Insects, small animals and pond life flourish here, along with the plants and trees, and the loudest sounds are the calls of birds.

Accompanied children are welcome, as are dogs on leads, and there are garden benches for those who would just like to sit. No entry fee, but donations welcome.

June to August (By Appointment Only)

Location: The Blossoms, Carey, Hereford HR2 6NF.  Mr and Mrs Stevenson.

Description: The garden, which covers about two thirds of an acre, divides by natural features into separate “rooms”, including a pond which supports quantities of frogs and toads.  The whole area, which includes flower beds, lawns, an orchard and small meadow, is bird and insect friendly, and an ideal place to spend a tranquil hour or so.

Open Mondays and Wednesdays, June to August, but please phone in advance - 01432 840496. No set entry fee. Donations welcome.

Directions: 6 miles from Ross, 9 miles from Hereford off A49 or B4224, very close to the Cottage of Content.  563313 on the O.S. Land Ranger Map 149.  No refreshments, dogs or access for wheelchairs.

June - September (by appointment only)

Location: The Old Cartshed, Hazel Farm, Dymock Road, Ledbury, Ms Mary Kidson.

Description: Enjoy her garden and small orchard, including raised vegetable beds, herb garden, rose garden and wildlife pond area.
