Widgeon

Reedbeds are not a common habitat in Scotland and this small 6 ha reserve, lying on the edge of the Inner Solway, protects one of the largest reedbeds on the estuary.

The reeds provide cover and breeding sites for many small passerines, including populations of Sedge Warblers and Reed Buntings. In addition to the reedbed, the reserve also contains areas of mudflat and saltmarsh which provide rich feeding sites for waders and other waterbirds. The whole of the Inner Solway has been designated a Ramsar site and Special Protection Area by the European Union, largely because of its importance to wildfowl.

Pintail, Knot, Curlew and Oystercatchers feed on the rich invertebrate life within the mud, whilst Widgeon and Barnacle Geese graze on the merse. Some of the saltmarsh lies above the highest summer tides and thus provides safe nesting sites for Lapwings, Redshank and Common Terns.
