The Common Darter is a small Dragonfly with an orange-red body and striped yellow legs. They are common over the ditches and lochs at Knowetops putting on a superb aerobatic display, watch closely and you may see them not only flying forwards, but hovering or flying backwards and sideways too! They are also usually the last dragonflies to be seen in the year. Darters are so named for their hunting technique, they will sit on a prominent twig or stem waiting for their prey to approach and then dart out and ambush them. Once it has found a good spot the Common Darter will often use the same perch for several days. |
