Found in open woodland and clearings, or in well-drained grassland, Bracken and scrub mosaics. The adults fly over a relatively short period from May to June and feed on nectar from a range of different plants, but the larvae feed only on Dog Violet (Viola canina) and Primrose (Primula vulgaris). Although still locally frequent within Dumfries and Galloway, changing farming and forestry practices have lead to a significant decline in numbers of this species and it is now an endangered species. Protected under schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it is also a priority species under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. |
