These fun and informative events will run between 10am and 12:30pm and will concentrate on involving families in nest box building. The boxes will then be put up in Carrfield Wood and Ecclesfield park. Families are welcome and tools and materials will be provided free of charge. Children should be accompanied by an adult and old clothes are recommended. There will be an opportunity to purchase the boxes built, for a small fee. Many of Britain’s birds, including robins and blue tits, prefer to nest in holes and cracks in old trees. Nowadays it is uncommon for trees in urban areas to reach the age where these cavities form. Providing nest boxes is a great way to attract these birds back to our parks and gardens. These two community days form part of Sheffield Wildlife Trust’s ongoing commitment to involve the public in increasing biodiversity throughout Sheffield. The trust has for some time been working with community groups to improve the environment and encourage wildlife into Ecclesfield and Meersbrook parks. Sheffield Wildlife Trusts Head of Conservation and Education, Nigel Doar, was happy with the idea:,"The birds in our parks and gardens are the most popular and well recognised form of wildlife found in Sheffield. That’s why we need to encourage them, and nest boxes are eat way to ensure they will still be hear next year."
