These can be produced very simply or more elaborately, depending on the amount of money you want to spend. You could produce them yourself, on your home computer, or get them professionally designed. Duplicate your leaflet or poster by photocopying or printing. Printing will probably be cheaper if you want to produce more than 100 copies. Remember that black and white designs will be cheaper than full colour. An attractive compromise is a design containing black, white and another colour. A useful publication on leaflet and poster design is ‘Creative Low Budget Publication Design’, Mary Pretzer, (1998), North Light Books. ISBN 0-89134-847-6. Leaflets should contain all the main points of information about your project but people are unlikely to read huge amounts of text or complicated ideas. Use photos, diagrams and line drawings where possible to stimulate interest. If possible, get them designed by someone with artistic skills. Contact your local art college; sometimes design students will be happy to take on your leaflet as one of their projects. This is often an excellent and cheap way to get a well-designed leaflet. The title of the leaflet should be eye-catching and simple to encourage people to pick it up and read. Always remember to include the exact location of yourddress and number so people can find out more. Posters are a great way of advertising an event. They should be as large as possible and not usually less than A3 in size. Smaller posters can be useful if you know they will be used on notice boards with limited space. Make them as attractive as possible with a clearly visible, catchy or even humorous title. Posters should contain much less information than a leaflet.
A simple notice board at the entrance should give details of the name of your green space, who owns and manages it, and the times and days it is open. Route signs should be erected along the trails to ensure visitors do not get lost, if the site is big enough for this to be necessary. Display warning notices prominently at potentially dangerous locations such as ponds, rivers, quarries and old buildings. Try to persuade someone with good working skills to make eyecatching posts and signs to attract visitors to your site and to show them the way round. |
