Green City Action

Green City Action is a non- profit making community group that was set up in 1993 by members of SCRAP (Sheffield Community Recycling Action Program). They identified Pitsmoor and Firth Park in North East Sheffield as areas in need of environmental and community action and formed Green City Action to encourage recycling, organic gardening and other green initiatives. Working in Pitsmoor they focus on helping people to choose a healthier lifestyle and improve the living green environment for themselves. From small beginnings,

employing a few volunteers and with money from the Urban Programme Fund (a Government initiative since replaced by the Single Regeneration Budget), Green City Action has grown to employ one full time manager and several part-time staff. They have expanded from a membership base of 40 local people in 1997 to 300 in 2000. The management committee is made up of this membership, who are consulted via the Annual General Meeting, occasional meetings throughout the year, questionnaires and surveys.

Green City Action run a tool store, a seed exchange and a toy resource centre. The tool store makes tools available that would otherwise be too expensive for many people to buy. In this way Green City Action improve the garden environment, bringing social benefits to the neighbourhood. The seed exchange encourages people to grow their own food and flowers, learning and relearning old skills. The toy store gives families with pre-school age children a chance to socialise, whilst providing fun and education and bridging the gap between people who have and people who have not. Green City Action also works with junior schools, ethnic minority groups, women’s groups local resource centres and other community groups, and they have organised successful events like the Pitsmoor Multicultural Festival. A recent project is to organise community composting project for Pitsmoor.
