1.0.1 The need for action

Despite the recognised value of high quality green space and the wide range of circumstances in which it occurs, it faces many threats. Some of the country’s best green spaces have been damaged by housing, leisure centres and other developments. Development continues to erode Britain’s green space resource as local authorities, schools and hospitals are tempted to sell off land and developers look for more land in the "best" areas of Britain’s towns and cities. Recent changes in the government’s approach to lands use planning mean that increasingly, developers will be targeting wildlife-rich, vacant plots that form an important part of the urban natural environment.

The Wild Web Community Action Handbook has been produced to assist groups and individuals keen to protect and enhance green spaces for people and wildlife. We hope that this pack will give confidence to those using it and that it will encourage others to join you in your good work. Each section is intended as an introduction to green space activity and will hopefully encourage you to expand on subjects of particular interest to you or your group.

The purpose of this pack is to improve the quality and quantity of Sheffield’s natural greenspace by encouraging people to take action in their local area. It will help the Wildlife Trust in its quest to provide ongoing support to local groups and individuals and to promote self-help through the provision of further information and contacts.
