Birmingham &
the Black Country
Flora Project

Introduction

This is a project to map the flora of the region on a 1km square basis. It started in 1997 and already has almost 23,500 records for over 830 species throughout the area. It is hoped that this will be a five year project to produce an atlas of the region's flora.

Getting involved

Anyone with a reasonable knowledge of identifying plants can get involved (contacts listed below). As mentioned, recording is on a 1km square basis, but any reliably identified records for the region will be gratefully received. Each 10km square has a co-ordinator, who is responsible for collating and validating the records within their area. They may also organise recording event to cover underworked areas, or to provide help, advice or training for beginners and expert alike - we can always learn something new!

Recording

The emphasis of the flora is to collect as many reliable species records as possible in a relatively short time, hence, recording has been made as simple as possible - a list of "common species" need only be ticked once for each 1km square (although EcoRecord would prefer annual returns if possible), additionally species not occurring on the common list are recorded with extra data to enable revisits for verification if required. These recording cards are available from EcoRecord free of charge.
